Goodnight Nobody by Jennifer Weiner
When native New Yorker Kate Klein relocates to the postcard-perfect Connecticut suburbs, she has no idea that things in her pretty little town aren't as perfect as they seem. Kate Klein has survived her twenties, and the attendant heartaches: losing the love of her life to his ex-girlfriend, a flame-haired model named Michelle; losing her single-girl identity after marriage and the rapid-fire birth of her babies; and losing her beloved New York City after she's stroller-jacked at gunpoint and her husband insists that they move. Now Kate's stranded and lonely in the upscale, upper-crust suburb of Upchurch, Connecticut. Her husband's never home, the supermommies on the playground don't accept her, and most of her orgasms are of the do-it-yourself variety. When one of her fellow mothers is murdered, and the police department can't get a clue, she decides to take matters into her own hands, fighting crime between 8:45 and 11:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, when her kids are in nursery school. As she unravels the murdered woman's double life, Kate discovers some disturbing truths about her neighbors and her new hometown, her marriage, and herself. Utterly engrossing and laugh-out-loud funny, Goodnight Nobody is another unputdownable tale, an insightful mystery with a great heart, and a narrator you'll never forget. Reviews Kate Klein, an accidental mother of three in suburban Connecticut, misses New York City and just doesn't seem to fit in with all of the expensively dressed mommies. A former journalist, Kate is bored staying at home until the day she is invited to lunch at a neighbor's house and finds the woman's body lying in a pool of blood. With the help of her outrageous best friend and a detective, a former flame from New York, she swiftly begins her own investigation into the murder, uncovering plenty of suburban secrets along the way. Although this novel is billed as Weiner's first mystery, libraries may want to shelve it with her other fiction, as die-hard mystery fans may be less than impressed. Comparisons to Susan Isaac's Compromising Positions is inevitable (Isaacs is one of Weiner's favorite authors), but Weiner's knack for creating characters with personality and witty social commentary make this a winner on its own terms. Highly recommended. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/05.]-Rebecca Vnuk, River Forest P.L., IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
